History

The VBSDA has been a Houston institution and is proud to be a part of its growth.  Grandmaster Van Binh and his family were one of the first refugees of the War in Vietnam to be welcomed by warm Houstonians.  We are proud to contrbiubute to this wonderfull City, the State and to the ever-evolving American experience!

.

Since, he has taught over 10,000 Houstonians the art of Taekwon-Do.  Gr. Master Van Binh’s five children also trained side by side with the new family of martial artists.  In Houston, Texas as was the case in Saigon, Vietnam , thousands of lives have been touched by the philosophy of Taekwon-Do through the tutelage of Gr. Master Van Binh.  Today, after three decades in America, Gr. Master Van Binh spends most of his time in different countries teaching in seminars and overseeing black belt examinations as the Chairman of the Black Belt Promotions Committee for the ITF. His children continue the tradition of the VBSDA as a new generation of martial artists are born.

In April of 1975, Gr. Master Van Binh arrived in Houston, Texas with his wife, five children and an elderly mother after fleeing from a communist-ruled war-torn Vietnam. Two years later, Gr. Master Van Binh began again to teach Taekwon-Do out of the living room in a rented house.  In 1977 he moved the classes to a commercial space on Milam Street and Elgin Street adjacent to the house and founded the Van Binh Self Defense Academy (the house and the commercial center are still there today).  The Academy was soon discovered by Houstonians at the time curious to learn of this new form of Karate with a Korean name.

Grand Master Van Binh- circa 1956

Grand Master Van Binh currently holds a 9th Dan ITF Black Belt, the highest rank in the ITF system.  He is one of few in the world who holds this honor, which was bestowed upon him by the founder of the Taekown-Do and the ITF, General Choi Hong Hi, shortly before the General passed away.

GM Van Binh is still active in the affairs of his Do Jang and travels around the world teaching seminars to the ITF circuit.
