About Taekwon-Do

What is Taekwon-Do?

In Korean, Taekwon-Do means “the way of the feet and of the hands”.  Taekwon-Do is a Martial Art which formalizes the delivery of offensive and defensive techniques against an opponent while adhering to principles of physics to produce the maximum force with the minimum of effort.  The methodology of these techniques is recorded in the Taekown-Do Pattern or Tul.  The Pattern can be explained as a choreography of techniques against an imaginary person.  The Pattern is a tool to help develop strength, speed, balance, breathing and concentration in the person who continually practices the Pattern.

Taekwon-Do training also consists of Free-sparring, which is an un-choreographed exchange of techniques between two real opponents.  Since it is un-choreographed, Free-sparring helps to develop reflexes and clear thinking in a life-threatening situation.  Many who practice Taekwon-Do also compete in organized tournaments to test their skills against another person of their similar rank or skill level.

Of equal importance to the physical development is the mental and spiritual development in Taekwon-Do.  Those who teach Taekwon-Do do so under the continual framework of respect for all humans.  This is expressed in the manner of saluting each other by lowering the head from the waist down.  Free sparring begins and ends with a bow, and reminds the opposing sides that the entire physical exchange of techniques is done with respect for one another.  It is always stressed in the class that Taekwon-Do is a weapon that should be used only in a self-defense situation.

Taekwon-Do and our society

Now, more than ever, we need regiment in our lives and in the lives of our children.  Our society has lost its balance.  We see a country that is in conflict with itself, and this conflict is represented in the actions of individuals.  Taekwon-Do provides us with the tools that we need to bring harmony back in our lives.  This harmony can only resonate through society when it is harnessed first by individuals.  Through Taekwon-Do training, we attain strength of body and mind.  Once we are in control of ourselves, we can be in control of our environment.  Then, there is no need to dominate our environment through its destruction.
